The Elephant
This (like all the other books in the series)is an excellent book. The elephant is very much the neglected piece.Often dismissed or ignored by others. This book proves them wrong. The many subtle uses of the elephant are described in detail in the quiet opening ,the mid-game and its often crucial role in the end game. The elephant is MUCH more than just a defensive piece and this book teaches you how to use it to full advantage. One of the best books i have ever bought.

For Intermediate to Advanced level users
In addition to providing a complete syntax reference for all core Perl functions, Clinton Pierce's Perl Developer's Dictionary also provides quick access to language syntax, constructs, and other language issues for experienced developers. Each major section of the Perl Developer's Dictionary is prefaced with a short, succinct introduction to provide background material on the subject at hand, and then is followed by a series of "dictionary" entries that cover exactly one topic, carefully cross-referenced and indexed with the rest of the book. Perl Developer's Dictionary is very highly recommended for Intermediate to Advanced level users.

Pioneers of Geology : Discovering Earth's Secrets (Lives in Science)
Published in School & Library Binding by Franklin Watts, Incorporated (March, 2001)
Authors: Margaret W. Carruthers and Susan Clinton
Average review score:

Pioneers Of Geology Rocks!
Pioneers of Geology: Discovering Earth's Secrets by Margaret W. Carruthers and Susan Clinton [Reading Between The Bones: The Pioneers of Dinosaur Paleontology] is an excellent overview of geology and geologists for the late elementary and middle school aged kid. The book is well-written and kept my attention, even though it is a subject that I know exceedingly well and was written for a younger reader. I am pleased that the scientists were presented in a true-to-life manner. Too often these gentlemen are presented in a 2-dimensional, cardboard fashion that makes it sound like geology has saints that geologists worship. I am particularly pleased with the inclusion of G.K. Gilbert and Gene Shoemaker. G.K. Gilbert is arguably the best geologist from the age of the Great Surveys and is well-known to most students of geology, but is often overlooked in popular writing [perhaps because laccoliths, isostatic rebound, ancient lake shores and deltas, and multiple working hypotheses aren't as sexy as boat trips down the Colorado River or the wonders of Yellowstone]. Gene Shoemaker has gotten more press lately due to the public's fascination with asteroids and comets crashing into the Earth in the past and Jupiter in the present, but his whole life story, including his status as the first planetary geologist and as trainer of the Moon men, deserves to be better known [for young people who are particularly taken with the life of Gene Shoemaker, I also recommend Shoemaker by Levy: The Man Who Made an Impact by David H. Levy]. The book is well-organized, with each chapter subdivided into sections headed by boldfaced subtitles. The book has several helpful appendices that present the reader with a Geologic Time Scale, a cross-section of the Earth, and a map of the Earth's tectonic plates. There is also a glossary, a thorough bibliography, and a well-done index. This book should be in every elementary school and middle school library in the country and would be an excellent gift for the budding geologist.

The Postmodern Presidency: Bill Clinton's Legacy in U.S. Politics (Political Science)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Txt) (November, 1900)
Author: Steven E. Schier
Average review score:

Examines Clinton's role in redefining the institution
The Postmodern Presidency: Bill Clinton's Legacy In U.S. Politics examines Clinton's role in redefining the institution of the presidency, and his affect on future presidents' economic and foreign policies. The contributors focus on the president's unprecedented courtship of public opinion; how pools affected policy; how the president gained "celebrity" status; how Clinton's "postmodern" style of public presidency helped him survive the 1994 elections and impeachment; and how all of this might impact upon future holders of the office. The Postmodern Presidency also demonstrates how the Clinton presidency changed party politics in the public and in Congress, with long-term implications and costs to both Republicans and Democrats, while analyzing Clinton's effect on the 1990s "culture wars", the politics and importance of gender, and the politics and policy of race. A strongly recommended addition to 20th century political science and American political history reading lists and reference collections, The Postmodern Presidency is informative, engaging, insightful, and thought-provoking.

The President's Agenda: Domestic Policy Choice from Kennedy to Clinton
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (January, 1999)
Author: Paul Charles Light
Average review score:

Excellent!
Understanding how presidents make policy decisions in the modern political environment can help us understand the constraints operating serious change. Presidents often feel they have a certain agenda to push through the system: that is why they were elected. However, it is far easier said than done. Instead of coming up with unique ideas to address the problems of the country, a president's staff must choose from among policy ideas that have already been floating around. Presidents are often forced to choose between legislative success and good policy - they usually choose the former at the expense of the latter. Hence the country is stuck with a no-win presidency. This book is well researched through extensive staff intereviews and first hand accounts of the inner workings of many past presidencies. If you have ANY interest in the presidency, this is a definite book to have on your shelf.
